Phoenix Sky Harbor rolls out Earth Month events and sustainability outreach
Phoenix Sky Harbor is using April to spotlight airport sustainability work, student education and public Earth Day programming. The campaign combines hands-on activities for middle school students with passenger-facing events and a broader message about long-term environmental resilience across the city's aviation system.
Phoenix Sky Harbor announced a monthlong Earth Month program built around environmental awareness, sustainability and resiliency. The airport framed the effort as part of its broader position as a national leader in airport sustainability, using public events in April to connect day-to-day airport operations with climate, waste, water and energy goals.
One of the featured events is SOAR with STEAM, scheduled for April 16 in partnership with Southwest Airlines. The airport said 180 students from Wilson Middle School and Estrella Middle School would take part in activities designed to introduce them to sustainability concepts and aviation-related learning, giving the program an education pipeline angle rather than treating Earth Month only as a passenger campaign.
Sky Harbor also planned a public Earth Day activation for April 22 inside the terminals and at the 44th Street PHX Sky Train Station. According to the airport, staff from the Aviation Department's sustainability team, PHX Navigators and the airport mascot Amelia would share information directly with travelers, turning a routine travel day into a visible sustainability outreach opportunity.
The release also tied this year's programming to longer-term work already underway. Sky Harbor highlighted its PHX Green Business Partner Program, which earned the 2025 Airports Going Green Award, and said the City of Phoenix Aviation Department is applying sustainability practices not only at Sky Harbor but also at Deer Valley and Goodyear airports. For Arizona residents, the practical takeaway is that the region's main airport is using April events to showcase a broader, ongoing environmental strategy rather than a one-off celebration.
