Quail Trail

Giant quails play and greet visitors at a suburban park.

About

Naranja Park might be like thousands of others throughout the United States if not for the giant family of quails at the southern entrance. The tallest of these statues is over twelve feet tall. They hold objects normally expected at a park (although not among quails), such as a kite, a skateboard, and a soccer ball.

These humorous sculptures are appropriately the work of ten local high-school students, in partnership with the professional sculptors Jason Butler and Hiro Tashima. The statues consist of a steel skeleton surrounded by layers of foam and painted concrete. They are even supported underground by more concrete, making them sturdy enough to be played on by children.

The sculptors paid extra attention to realism, adding features such as separate skateboard wheels that actually turn!
