The Mayor of Tempe declares this month to be the United States and China Month in Tempe (picture) [ACA, Tempe] The Chinese diaspora in Arizona are no strangers to Tempe City in the southern area of Phoenix. The China Week activities during the Spring Festival every year, the various Chinese education training provided by the Confucius Institute at Arizona State University (ASU), and the frequent cultural exchanges with sister cities Taipei and Chengdu have become deeply rooted in the hearts of the people. In recent years, large-scale celebrations held by overseas Chinese and academic circles in Tianbi City on the occasion of National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival have gradually taken shape. On September 10, the National Day Mid-Autumn Festival celebration "Phoenix Autumn" co-organized by the Arizona Chinese Association (ACA) and the Chinese Students and Scholars Association of three universities in the state (ASU, University of Arizona (UofA), and Northern Arizona University (NAU)) at the Memorial Union of ASU was a complete success. Counselor Zhang Jian of the Consulate General in Los Angeles, state assemblyman Kimberly Yee, Tianbi City Mayor Hugh Hallman, director of the American Overseas Chinese Newspaper Shu Lan and many overseas Chinese leaders attended the meeting and delivered warm congratulatory speeches. When Mayor Hallman announced on the spot that September 10th to October 9th would be Tianbi City’s U.S.-China Friendship Month, the entire audience cheered and applauded thunderously. The mayor's exciting declaration pushed the entire celebration to a climax. "Whereas, the Arizona Chinese Association is committed to promoting society's further understanding of the positive image of the Chinese community through culture, education, and sports activities." Whereas, the Arizona Chinese Association is committed to promoting extensive exchanges in the fields of culture, trade, science, and communications between China and the United States; Whereas, the Arizona Chinese Association is committed to supporting Chinese schools and Chinese education in the United States; Whereas, the Arizona Chinese Association is committed to promoting Chinese residents to actively integrate into the local mainstream society and participate in electoral activities; Whereas, The Arizona Chinese Association is committed to celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese festival, on September 13, 2011; whereas, the Arizona Chinese Association is committed to celebrating the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 2011; and whereas, Tempi City, Arizona is called home by many Chinese residents. I, Mayor Hugh Hallman of Tempe, Arizona, hereby officially declare September 10 to October 9, 2011, as U.S.-China Friendship Month in Tempe, Arizona. " The mayor's declaration once again affirms the contribution of the Chinese community to the local economy, culture, politics and other aspects. During the US-China Friendship Month, ACA will join hands with the Overseas Chinese Newspaper to hold a large-scale "Chinese Family Portrait" exhibition in various government departments in Tianpi City to show audiences of all ethnic groups the beautiful lives and happy tomorrows of all ethnic groups in China.
