Surprise Mayor Sharon Walcott and councilors took office on January 3 (Alberta Times) On January 3, Surprise welcomed the swearing-in ceremony of the elected mayor and city councilors. Sharon Walcott takes office as mayor at City Hall. Also taking the oath were the city's Ward 2 Alderman Charlie DeAlton, Ward 3 Alderman John Williams, and Ward 4 Alderman Roy Villanueva. Surprise City is located in the northwest of Phoenix, west of Sun City across Highway 60. There were 30,848 residents in the 2000 census. By the 2010 census, the urban population was 117,517, an increase of 281%.
