Spirit Airlines Charges $100 Carry-on Baggage Fee - Tip of the Iceberg (Alberta Times) Spirit Airlines recently announced that it will charge a $100 fee for a carry-on bag. It's one of the most infuriating recent developments for passengers, but other airlines have quietly raised their fees. Spirit Airlines said it will charge $100 to passengers who pay for a carry-on bag at the gate starting Nov. 6. That's a jump from the $45 the airline currently charges at the gate. This means carrying a piece of luggage could cost you $200 round trip. Most airlines don't charge for a carry-on bag, but last month Allegiant Air also announced it would start charging up to $35 for a carry-on bag, depending on the length of the route. Baggage fees on other airlines have also been rising since last September when a survey of all fees was conducted: Delta Air Lines once charged a maximum of $75 for a second checked bag on some international flights. The airline now charges $80 for flights between the United States and Europe or North Africa if the passenger pays online, or $100 otherwise. American Airlines last September charged up to $60 for a second checked bag on some international flights. For flights between the United States and South America (excluding Brazil), it is now $70. JetBlue raised its second checked bag fee from $35 to $40 in February. However, unlike most airlines, JetBlue doesn't charge for the first checked bag. For Spirit Airlines passengers, the $100 one-way carry-on bag fee will be reduced to $50 if paid at the ticket counter or check-in kiosk. The cost further drops to $35 one-way if booked online before check-in, or $40 if booked through the airline's customer service centre. Another option for the airline's passengers is that it costs $30 to check a bag one way if booked online, or $35 if booked through the airline's call center. Checking a bag at the airport is $45 one way.
