The axle of pickup and SUV can lock unexpectedly (Alberta Times) Chrysler announced on the 14th that it was recalling 278,000 pickup trucks and SUVs in the United States because their rear axles could unexpectedly lock. Chrysler said it will notify owners starting in March and dealers will repair them free of charge. The vehicles being recalled include 2009 through 2012 Ram 1500 pickup trucks, 2009 through 2011 Dodge Dakota pickup trucks, and 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango pickup trucks. Chrysler will recall 102,000 trucks in Canada, Mexico and elsewhere around the world. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said a nut on the rear axle of these vehicles could come loose due to a loose fastener, causing the rear axle to lock and causing the driver to lose control. Chrysler said its dealers will install a retainer to stabilize the nut at no charge to customers. Chrysler said the problem caused 15 accidents but no injuries.
