ICE uncovers new smuggling tunnel on U.S.-Mexico border (Alberta Times) Homeland Security Investigations officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said they coordinated with the U.S. Border Patrol's Tucson division and discovered a drug smuggling tunnel across the border between Nogalas, Arizona, and Mexico. The tunnel entrances are in a front yard in Nogalas, Mexico, and in a warehouse in Nogalas, Arizona. Homeland Security agents and Mexican federal police entered both ends of the tunnel at the same time early Thursday morning. No one was found, but 550 pounds of marijuana was seized. The tunnel is five feet below ground level, approximately 110 feet long, averages two feet wide, and is supported by wooden piles. The tunnel does not have any ventilation or electrical equipment, and it is believed that it was completed not long ago. "The discovery of this tunnel is yet another successful example of collaboration between Homeland Security and Border Patrol, in conjunction with the Mexican Federal Police," said Nogalas Special Operations Officer Kevin Kelly, who led the operation. "Through vigilance and close cooperation, we can seal tunnels before they are used and reduce the possibility of drugs entering the United States." In the past three years, the Department of Homeland Security has discovered 22 cross-border tunnels in Nogalas and has sealed them all.
