—Higley’s Coronado Elementary School to Offer Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program

(2014-2-4, Gilbert, AZ) Higley United School District (Higley United School District: Coronado Elementary (www.husd.org) will fully launch English/Chinese immersion bilingual teaching this fall – starting from Kindergarten and First Grade at the same time in August this year. Registration is currently in progress. Bilingual registration consultation hotline: 480-279-6900. The term Dual Language Immersion Program is not so familiar to many friends. It means that students use English and an Esperanto language, such as Spanish, Chinese, French, etc., to study at the same time every day. The specific direction of Coronado Elementary School’s choice of English/Chinese immersion education is this: Pre-kindergarten and first-grade students learn Language Art and Social Study in English; while Math and Science are taught in Chinese. Students who enter this program, that is, children who will enter kindergarten and first grade, spend half a day at school studying language, literature and social studies in English, and half a day studying mathematics and science in Chinese.

English/Chinese immersion teaching has been a particularly popular educational direction in the North American education industry in the past six or seven years. It is already a mature educational practice in Utah, South Carolina, Delaware, Colorado and other places, forming a unique and rich educational model. Coronado Elementary School will launch this teaching project in the coming school year based on the mature teaching system and rich teaching resources of immersion teaching in the United States. It also receives strong support from the ASU Confucius Institute, Hanban, American CollegeBoard and other international education organizations. Not only have the educational resources been well integrated and developed, but more importantly, they have directly introduced the best educational talents from China and the United States into the daily teaching of English/Chinese immersion bilingual teaching.

>Coronado Elementary School's English/Chinese immersion bilingual teaching started in August this year, and then as students entered the first grade of high school, the school added a new level of bilingual classes every year, achieving immersive teaching for all grades from preschool to sixth grade (K-6) within 6 years. Chinese, as a learning tool used by students every day, will directly teach students the two daily courses of mathematics and science. Two courses, English Language and Literature and Sociology, continue to be taught in English.

Bilingual teaching is adopted, but the teaching objectives are the same as monolingual teaching - both are based on the Common Core Standards of the Ministry of Education. English teachers and Chinese teachers work closely together to ensure that English and Chinese expressions in mathematics and science are promoted simultaneously. Students' standardized testing, progression, assessment, and relocation to any monolingual education institution will not be affected in any way. The only difference is that they mastered Chinese more proficiently from a younger age. Dr. Dawn Foley, curriculum director of the Higley School District where Coronado Elementary School is located, pointed out: Not only can learning a second foreign language improve students’ future employment opportunities, but research has shown that children who start bilingual learning early tend to perform well in future mathematics studies. "Using Chinese, you can communicate directly with almost 50% of the world's population," said Dr. Mai-Lon Wong, principal of Coronado Elementary School. "The result of the questionnaire survey of residents in our school district is that 67% of residents are interested in sending their children to English/Chinese immersion bilingual teaching classes." Last September, Mayor John of Gilbert, where Coronado Elementary School is located Lewis also expressed his concern for bilingual immersion teaching, emphasizing that it is crucial to strengthen the local economy and cultivate international talents through the future learning of Chinese and other Esperanto languages. Enrollment at Coronado Elementary School for pre-kindergarten and first grade is currently underway.
