Bashas’ supermarket chain based in Chandler was recently attacked by a cyber attack. Hackers entered the company’s computer system and intercepted customer payment information.
Bashas’ administrators say they successfully removed a highly sophisticated piece of malware from their systems that is believed to have intercepted customer information using credit or debit cards. Administrators said that while only some customers in Lake Havasu and Pinal counties were compromised, security reminders have been issued to all customers who have recently used credit and bank cards at the supermarket.
The company is currently working with forensic experts and federal law enforcement officials to investigate the case and find the attacker. In addition, the company's computer system has also been updated to improve security measures to protect customers' personal information.
>Bashas’ supermarket chain is a local enterprise. In 1932, Bashas, a Lebanese businessman, opened the first Bashas supermarket in Goodyear. Today, the supermarket chain has expanded to California and New Mexico. Bashas’ supermarket chain was once the leading supermarket chain in the state, and its second-generation owner Eddie Bashas ran for governor of Arizona in 1994. In the late 1990s, Fry's supermarket chain entered Maricopa County, and Bashas' current situation is not as good as before.
