Energy Minister Steven Chu selected from universities across the United States, with the University of New Mexico and Arizona State University as a team, to compete to develop solar energy development projects for the next year. The team will develop solar-powered, energy-efficient homes and design good solutions to attract consumers. Officials said the project, called the Solar Decathlon, will be a two-year pilot project in Irvine, California, to build and test home installations of solar energy equipment. LaRue, an assistant professor of engineering at the University of New Mexico (State), serves as the director of the project. She said that the development of solar energy technology and related industries in the southwestern United States will help promote economic development. LaRoi said the decathlon project will provide a sustainable infrastructure education opportunity for the public.
