Students Protest ASU Smoking Ban After the Maricopa County Community College Board implemented a ban on smoking on campus on July 1 this year, the Arizona State University Faculty Senate also passed a resolution in September declaring that smoking will be banned on all state university-owned campuses and leased facilities, effective August 1, 2013. Many students at ASU disagreed with the ban, and a student-led group launched a protest movement on the Tempe campus last Wednesday. “The message the school is giving is not to protect students, but to protect themselves,” said Carlos Alfaro, a senior majoring in economics and U.S. history. "We are adults and we have the freedom to choose. For example, we know that eating junk food is not good, but the government cannot force people not to eat it. This is our own choice." In addition to Arizona State University, more than 600 colleges and universities across the country have pledged to establish smoke-free campuses.
