The Confucius Institute at Arizona State University will jointly host a themed traveling exhibition:
The Confucius Institute at Arizona State University, the Center for Jewish Studies at Arizona State University, and the Arizona Jewish Historical Society will jointly host a traveling exhibition with the theme "Jewish Refugees in Shanghai, 1933-1941." This exhibition is located at the Cultler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center and will be on view from October 18 to December 15. Admission is free to members of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society, students and active duty military.
"Jewish Refugees in Shanghai, 1933-941" records a unique story that happened in Shanghai during the Nazi Holocaust. More than 18,000 Jewish refugees obtained documents allowing them to leave Europe through various channels, and moved to Shanghai, almost the only open city at the time. They study, work, get married, and have children in Shanghai. Although they live in poverty, they have saved their lives. During this unique period, they communicated with ordinary Chinese people and composed touching chapters of friendship.
This exhibition will have a grand opening banquet at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center at 5 pm on October 18. Not only can the audience enjoy traditional Jewish food and Chinese food, there will also be Weijia from the University of Wisconsin. Professor Li will give you the opening lecture "Between the Torah and the Tao Te Ching: European-Jewish-Chinese cultural encounters in Shanghai Jewish exile writing"
This exhibition brings together photos, documents, and artifacts from the time provided by the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Memorial Museum, and also specially invited several people who experienced that period of history to participate in various activities of this exhibition. During the exhibition, there will be various activities such as expert cultural lectures, film screenings, and reading clubs. At the same time, other related exhibits will also be on display at the Hayden Library on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University.
For the specific time and location of various activities in this exhibition, please see the event poster, or log on to the website of the Confucius Institute at Arizona State University at http://confuciusinstitute.asu.edu/portal/JewishShanghaiExhibit.
