Apple announced on the 4th of this month that it will invest in a new factory in the City of Mesa in the greater Phoenix area to produce sapphire materials, which will be used to manufacture components such as mobile phone camera lenses and fingerprint recognition buttons. The new factory will employ more than 700 employees, and if construction contractors are included, a total of more than 2,000 jobs will be created. SRP (Salt River Project) power company will provide 100% renewable energy for the new plant.

Apple will pay approximately US$578 million to the state's GT Advanced Technologies (hereinafter referred to as GAT) to sign a multi-year supply agreement for sapphire materials. At present, sapphire material has become an important component of iPhone. All iPhone camera modules require sapphire material, and the fingerprint recognition device of iPhone 5s also uses this material.

Inspired by this news, GAT's stock price rose 22% after the market closed on the 4th, and Apple's stock price also rose 1.3%.

For many years, Apple has entrusted Foxconn and other Asian manufacturers to manufacture a variety of products. In the face of criticism from American labor groups and politicians, Apple CEO Cook has begun to prioritize increasing employment opportunities in the United States. The new Mac Pro laptop that Apple will launch next month is assembled in Texas.
