>Yang Qiwei: China's first deepwater drilling platform will start drilling in the South China Sea on the 9th (Reported by Yang Qiwei, Special Correspondent, Guangzhou, Alberta Times) According to China National Offshore Oil Corporation, on May 9, China's first independently designed and built sixth-generation deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform "Hai Yang Shiyou 981" will officially start drilling in the South China Sea. This will be the first time that a Chinese petroleum company independently conducts deepwater oil and gas exploration and development, marking a substantial step in the deepwater strategy of China's offshore oil industry. It is understood that the drilling waters this time are 320 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong in the waters of the South China Sea, and the drilling depth is 1,500 meters. Internationally, oil and gas resources in sea areas with a water depth of more than 300 meters are generally defined as deepwater oil and gas, and water depths above 1,500 meters are called ultra-deep water. Among the abundant offshore oil and gas resources, deep water and ultra-deep water resources account for 30% to 40% of all marine resources. In recent years, 50% of the major exploration discoveries made around the world have come from the ocean, mainly deep-water areas. Deepwater areas have become an important successor area for oil and gas exploration and development internationally. At present, the offshore oil fields explored and developed by China's offshore oil industry generally have water depths less than 300 meters, and oil and gas exploration and development with water depths greater than 300 meters are in their infancy. The South China Sea is extremely rich in oil and gas resources. The oil geological resources of the entire South China Sea basin group are about 23 billion to 30 billion tons. The total natural gas geological resources are about 16 trillion cubic meters, accounting for one-third of China's total oil and gas resources, 70% of which are contained in the deep sea area of 1.537 million square kilometers.
