> Sears recalls 795,000 Kenmore dehumidifiers (Alberta Times) Sears and Kmart department stores have announced a recall of approximately 795,000 Kenmore brand dehumidifiers due to potential fire and burn hazards. The dehumidifiers could overheat, smoke, melt and catch fire, the companies and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a joint statement Thursday. The company received 107 accident reports, three of which involved smoke inhalation injuries. Reports include more than $7 million in property damage. This dehumidifier was produced between 2003 and 2005 and comes in three models including 35-, 50-, and 70-pint, priced between $140 and $220. They are sold in Sears and Kmart stores in the United States, as well as on both companies' websites. The product is made of white plastic and has the Kenmore branding on the top. Dehumidifier dimensions are 21-24 inches high, approximately 15 inches wide, and approximately 13.5 inches deep. They contain fans, humidity controls and water buckets. Some models include a remote control. The model numbers are: 35-pint (2004) – 580.54351400; 50-pint (2003) – 580.53509300; 70-pint (2003) – 580.53701300; 70-pint (2004) – 580.54701400; 70-pint (2005) – 580.54701500. If you remove the barrel, these model numbers should be visible on the right side of the inside of the machine. Individuals can contact the recall center at (855) 400-4641, or www.Kenmoredehumidifierrecall.com. Consumers will receive a Sears gift card valued at $75, $80, $90 or $100. The value of the gift card depends on the dehumidifier's capacity and year of manufacture. Gift cards can be used at any Sears or Kmart, or on the store website. Those consumers who don't need the gift cards can request a refund. All consumers affected by the recall will also receive a $25 coupon to purchase a new Kenmore dehumidifier at Sears or on the Sears website.
