His children Lucy, Robert and Tim issued the following statement:
"We are extremely saddened that our beloved father has passed away today. He was a great scientist and a remarkable man, and the success of his work will live on for many years to come. His courage and persistence, as well as his genius and humor, inspired people from all over the world. He once said: "There's not much point in the universe if it doesn't provide a home for the people you love. "We will miss him forever."
