The U.S. unemployment rate dropped to 7.7%, the lowest since 2008. Data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on the 8th showed that the U.S. non-agricultural sector unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points from the previous month to 7.7% in February this year. The United States added 236,000 jobs in February, a significant increase from the 119,000 new jobs in January. Both job creation and the unemployment rate decrease were better than previously expected. Stocks were also slightly higher at the open early Friday morning, with the Dow Jones climbing to another all-time high. Although jobs increased in all fields, construction was clearly the leader, with a net increase of 48,000 jobs in February. An improving job market in the construction sector is a sign that the overall economy is picking up.
