Hong Kong supports the adoption of Internet Protocol version 6 A spokesperson for the Office of the Chief Information Officer of the Hong Kong SAR Government stated on the 6th that the SAR Government supports the adoption of Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and encourages organizations in the information and communications technology industry to enable their services to support this version as soon as possible. According to reports, computers, mobile phones, electronic devices and sensors connected to the Internet all need a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address to identify identities and exchange information. Currently, IP addresses on the Internet mainly use the communication standard called Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4), and the number of addresses that can be allocated by this standard has reached its upper limit. Newly developed Internet services will gradually adopt a new communication standard called IPv6. The IPv6 standard can theoretically provide far more IP addresses than IPv4. It is expected that the public's demand for future Internet services using this new standard will increase. The spokesman said that the SAR government has adopted the IPv6 standard and is promoting Hong Kong's gradual transition from IPv4 to IPv6. At present, Hong Kong's Internet infrastructure already supports IPv6, and commercial IPv6-related services have begun to be provided on the market. The SAR government has launched IPv6 support in its main Internet infrastructure. The public can use this standard to log in to government websites that support IPv6, and send and receive emails to the SAR government using this standard. In order to promote the information and communication technology industry to test whether they are ready to transition from IPv4 to IPv6, the Internet Society, an international non-profit organization, has designated June 8 this year as World IPv6 Day. A global event aimed at testing IPv6 readiness. Some major Internet service providers, content providers and related industries will activate IPv6 functions on their main websites within 24 hours from 8 am on June 8 to 8 am on June 9, Hong Kong time. During the test period, it is expected that most Internet users will have no major impact on service, but a very small number of users may experience slowdowns or connection interruptions.
