Tax Inspection Questions and Answers: Families with tax returns higher than 500,000 or less than 15,000 are likely to be inspected. I recently received a tax audit notice from the Internal Revenue Service, and another friend of mine also received one. Are there a lot of tax audits in the United States recently? What kind of situations are most likely to be audited? Answer: There seems to be a trend at the moment. The rate of audits for those who file tax returns with an annual income (Adjusted Gross Income) of more than 500,000 yuan or less than 15,000 yuan and receive government subsidies has reached a record high. As the national treasury is in deficit and federal, state, and municipal debts are high, the rate at which low-income families with children receiving government subsidies are subject to audits has skyrocketed. In 2010 (tax filing year 2009), the audit rate for those with an annual income of more than 500,000 yuan increased by 21.4% compared with 2009. The audit rate for households with an annual income of more than 1 million yuan (about 0.3% of the total population) was 2.5 times (8.36%) that of households with an annual income of more than 500,000 yuan. The reason why the IRS spares no effort is because it is profitable to investigate the rich. In 2010, the tax revenue increased by more than 57 billion yuan due to strengthened inspections, an increase of 18% over the previous year. In addition, the government's trend is to strictly inspect the 1099 forms, not only the 1099 forms of casual workers, but also extended to the 1099 forms of general company commissions. Government audit rates are much higher for casual workers or commission holders than for W-2 workers. Now that the U.S. economy is in recession, there are more and more fines for traffic violations. In short, no matter what the situation is, if everyone just abides by the law, nothing will happen.
