5 Cars Consumer Reports Recommends Not Buying The latest issue of "Consumer Reports" magazine advises consumers to avoid buying five popular cars based on their reliability, including Toyota's gas-electric hybrid Prius C, Honda Civic sedan, Ford's crossover Edge, Chrysler's Jeep Liberty utility vehicle, and Dodge Grand Carvan. The magazine said these five vehicles "may be on many consumers' purchase lists, but we advise you not to buy them" because they either have poor reliability, score poorly in the magazine's tests, or both. The Honda Ximai has been a best-seller for many years, and it is also the Honda model that has received the most criticism from Consumer Reports. The magazine believes that Honda cut corners when redesigning the latest model of the Ximei. Car review magazines such as The Detroit Bureau also criticized Ximei for this problem. Toyota produces four Prius models, including the Prius C, the larger Prius V, the electric Prius plug-in, and the original hatchback Prius. The company hopes the 2012 Prius C will score high in Consumer Reports' tests. However, the magazine unceremoniously criticized the Prius C for having "a bumpy ride, loud noise, slow acceleration and a crude interior." A recent Consumer Reports reader survey found the Ford Edge's reliability to be below average. The magazine also criticized Edge's infotainment interface design for issues. The Jeep Liberty was one of the lowest-rated vehicles in the magazine's road tests, with poor fuel economy and poor on-road performance. Although the magazine praised the Dodge Caravan for its "flexible handling, comfort, and well-equipped features," it criticized its high fuel consumption (17 mpg), "squeaky" body, loud noise, faulty sliding doors, and "imprecise handling in extreme situations."
