In the spring group dance finals of the just-concluded 2021-2022 International "Taoli Cup" Dance Competition, the two dances selected by the Art Institute of Alberta achieved remarkable results. "Singing the Spring Rain" won the Top Ten Platinum Award, and "Tracing the Jump" won the Platinum Award and the Best Charm Award.
The young dancers with an average age of less than 10 years old not only won the first place in their age group with the Chinese classical dance "Singing the Spring Rain", but also won the highest award in the entire group dance competition - the Top Ten Platinum Award. This dance stood out from 85 competitive dances selected by countries around the world and won one of only 6 top ten platinum awards.
"Suiyue" is a Chinese folk dance with a novel theme. The basic elements of the dance are taken from Haiyang Yangge and expressed in high-level art forms. The dancers performed fish swimming in the stream and advancing bravely in the rapids. The silk fans swayed freely like fish tails and the waves rolled. Dance students in the adult class at the Alberta College of the Arts come from different jobs and use their spare time to learn dance. In this competition, they interpreted this dance in their own way, conquered all the judges and audiences present, and won the only "Most Charming Award" and Platinum Award in this competition.
Against The Tide
Congratulations again to all the award-winning dancers. Their wonderful performances also show a part of the artistic life of Chinese in North America. One minute on stage, ten years of hard work off stage, so what kind of training do these dancers have to go through in order to have such graceful figures and flexible body expressions? Let’s go behind the scenes at the Art Institute of Alberta and see their daily basic skills training.
