From a historical perspective, the development of human society into today’s world system with sovereign states as its unit is a gradual evolution process.

Although this system has now basically taken shape, modern countries with a unified system have been established in places where countries can be established. Nearly two hundred countries, large and small, coexist on the same earth. However, it is not very clear what the nature of a modern state is, as well as its content, form and proper functions. Each country implements its own national ideals in its own way.

People once believed that the country was a collection of political interests. As long as the political system was democratized, national universal suffrage, one person, one vote, and political party rotation were implemented, other problems would be automatically solved.

This concept originated from the Enlightenment, and after two to three hundred years of practice, it has encountered more and more doubts today.

Western countries that have implemented democracy have implemented powerful dictatorships externally. The will of capital is not subject to any restraint, and its greedy and unbridled plunder has caused the world to be severely divided, fragmented, and conflict-ridden. When political power is reflected as external hegemony, democracy with decentralization as its essence also evolves into sharing the spoils among all the people.

Among non-Western countries, many poor countries hope to become rich and powerful by copying Western-style democracy, but the results are counterproductive. The country was originally poor and weak, and was frequently invaded by foreign countries. Relying on centralized power and elite governance could not guarantee that it would be self-reliant and self-reliant. The transplantation of decentralized and democratic systems just facilitated the intervention of foreign forces. The sovereign state that was supposed to reflect the interests of its own nation ended up becoming the general agent of foreign interests.

That's what happened. The increasingly severe polarization between rich and poor around the world has questioned the nature of the country and challenged its functions. No matter how advanced a political system is, it is meaningless if it cannot ensure the country's self-reliance and self-reliance and protect it from plunder by powerful countries.

A country that is not originally rich and powerful, even if its political system is not advanced, as long as it finds a development path suitable for its national conditions, can continue to win in fierce international competition, and gradually approach the level of a rich and powerful country, that is, it is a successful modern country, which is tantamount to grasping the essence of a modern country.

This can become a general consensus in the world today: In this unbalanced, competitive, and still abiding by the rules of natural selection globalization era, political system reform alone cannot solve all problems of national development. Once we give up the superstition of "politics in command", throw away the baggage of ideology, and temporarily shelve illusory political ideals, it will be easier to see clearly what the real problems a country faces are, to find out where the country is heading, and to develop quickly.

Some countries fully understand this truth, but they do not say it because it is not in their own interests to let everyone understand this. For example, those Western countries have always provided ideological resources and theoretical foundations for the modern world.

Countries that are already practicing this principle are not talking about it, because even if they have achieved initial success under the guidance of this principle, they are still far from the level where a mature theory can be summarized, let alone the level where it can be declared as a universal truth. Such as China today.

Counting the 100th anniversary from the Revolution of 1911 and the 62nd anniversary from the People's Republic of China, the consistent theme of China's modern history is: the founding, enrichment and power of a completely Chinese-style modern country.

On the eve of National Day, I had the opportunity to walk in the northwest of China and re-examine this huge country. From the arduous cultivation and border garrisoning in the Gobi Desert, where the sky was used as a quilt and the ground was used as a bed, to today's all-powerful launch of Tiangong-1, which is "riding the breeze to control the yin and yang", the Chinese people's modern nation-building almost from scratch has been called an epic and extraordinary achievement.

I would like to write this article to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, a completely Chinese-style modern country. ▊
