The authoritative American scientific magazine formally apologized for publishing an article that discriminated against Chinese Olympians (AACYF Los Angeles News) On the morning of August 6, 2012, the official website of the authoritative American scientific magazine "Nature" officially issued a statement, expressing its solemn apology to Ye Shiwen and other Chinese Olympians and Chinese scholars for an article published on the magazine's website on August 3 that questioned the abnormal performance of Chinese Olympian Ye Shiwen and suggested that current tests cannot detect all possible drugs. "Nature" magazine published an article written by a reporter from the magazine on August 3. After it was published online, it immediately aroused the attention and indignation of Chinese scholars in the United States. Dr. Wang Liming, who is engaged in molecular and cell biology research at the University of California, Berkeley, read this article and found that it was not only full of logical errors and misleading scientifically, but also had strong political and racial biases. On that day, he drafted a public letter of protest to the editor-in-chief of Nature magazine. After many Chinese scholars participated in the revision, he immediately sent it to Chinese natural scientists in the United States and around the world and collected signatures. In just two days after the protest letter was issued, it collected valid signatures from nearly 1,100 Chinese scientists and scholars from all top universities in the United States, including Harvard, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, National Institutes of Health, and California Institute of Technology, as well as from well-known universities and research institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Canada, Norway, and China. The protest letter stated that such an article brings disgrace to Nature magazine. And strongly demanded: "Nature magazine immediately withdraws the article and publicly apologizes to Ye Shiwen and all athletes who have been groundlessly accused." After learning of the apology from Nature magazine, Wang Liming said that after Ye Shiwen won the championship, some Western media had a dark mentality, which revealed their long-standing stereotypes and inherent impressions of China. How to correct this fallacy and prejudice, we must speak out our protest directly and clearly; and the protest must be strong enough. Therefore, the last part of the protest letter clearly stated to Nature magazine, "Before your journal apologizes, all students and scholars who signed the protest will no longer contribute or review manuscripts for Nature; they will no longer subscribe to Nature and its sub-journals; and they will not place any advertisements in Nature." The scholars who signed did not care about their personal gains and losses, and many scholars who participated in the revision and took the lead in collecting signatures said that they did not need to mention their personal names in the report. They listed the positions, departments, and even specific addresses of their universities and research institutions in detail on the joint website. Chinese scholars fully demonstrated their commitment to ethnic honors and the rigor, meticulousness, and professionalism of scholars. The success of this joint signature is also a successful collective "flash mob" for Chinese scholars around the world in recent years. From the list of participants, it can be seen that the strength of Chinese scholars in the global scientific community is even more eye-catching.
