Regarding the Southern Zhou incident, the attitudes of various Chinese media and websites have been clearly revealed.
The incident of the Southern Weekend newspaper's 2013 New Year's message being withdrawn and altered has been a hot topic for several days, but the Chinese official has not made any official response. An editorial published by the Global Times, a subsidiary of the Communist Party of China's People's Daily, on the incident seemed to be a watershed moment in the Chinese media's response to the official attitude.
According to multiple media sources on Weibo, the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China requested the media to publish a "Global Times" editorial on Tuesday (8th): "Southern Weekend's 'To Readers' is really thought-provoking."
The article accused that the entire incident seemed to have been fabricated by proliferators at the initial stage. The editorial also stated: I hope that all those who like Southern Weekend will cooperate with the quelling of the storm and not force a Chinese newspaper to play a confrontational role that it cannot bear anyway.
After the editorial was published online on Sunday, it was immediately reprinted by many media.
After Tencent News published the full text of this article, it made a statement: Publishing this article does not mean that Tencent agrees with its views or confirms its description.
Sina published this editorial under the title "Media says Chen Guangcheng was involved in Southern Weekend's New Year's speech incident."
When NetEase reprinted the editorial on Monday, it changed the title to "Southern Weekend's official Weibo: The cover introduction of the special issue was drafted by a person in charge of this newspaper", and then reposted Southern Weekend's 2006 New Year's message: A truth can weigh more than the weight of the entire world.
On Monday, the official Xinhua News Agency reposted the editorial on the homepage of its website, indicating the source of the article. The People's Daily also reprinted the article, with the title changed to: Southern Weekend's official Weibo: The introduction to the cover of the special issue was drafted by a person in charge of the newspaper.
The Southern Daily, which is also part of the Southern Newspaper Group, did not publish this editorial from the Global Times. Jiefang Daily, the official newspaper of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and China Youth Daily, an affiliate of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, also did not reprint it.
Compared with the silence of most party newspapers and organs, netizens seem to be more concerned about whether local media and websites publish this editorial.
According to newspaper front pages forwarded by netizens on Weibo, Guangzhou's New Express, Information Times and Shenzhen's Jingbao also reprinted the Global Times editorial on Tuesday.
The Beijing Times, which is part of the People's Daily newspaper chain like the Global Times, also reprinted the editorial in excerpts, but its online link was later removed.
However, the Southern Metropolis Daily, which both belongs to the Southern Department, and the Beijing News, which once belonged to the same newspaper department, did not reprint this editorial.
Other newspapers that did not reprint include Hunan's Xiaoxiang Morning Post, Shanghai's News Morning Post, Oriental Morning Post and China Youth Daily, the central organ of the Communist Youth League, leading some commentators to question whether the order from the Central Propaganda Department exists.
Sichuan writer Ran Yunfei wrote on his Weibo: Today many media outlets across the country, including Chongqing, did not yield to pressure and published editorials by the Global Times that slandered the Southern Zhou Dynasty. However, the four major market-oriented newspapers in Chengdu fully published it, and the Tianfu Morning Post even intensified its editorial note. The slavish nature of self-castration is clearly visible.
Observers have noticed that the attitude of various Chinese media and websites regarding Southern Weekend’s New Year’s speech incident has actually been revealed in their reporting in the past few days.
What was presented to people on Tuesday has been adjusted and sorted out several times, and its process is far more important and thought-provoking than its appearance.
