Taiwanese students are not bad, but they lose because of the environment

When comparing campuses and students on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, many people often mention that the advantage of Taiwanese students is creativity, but Chen Mutian does not think so. He mentioned that after going to the mainland for exchange, he found that Chinese students are no less creative than Taiwanese students. Their educational style has long since got rid of cramming teaching. Students think faster and learn faster. Just looking at the high school teaching environment on both sides of the Taiwan Strait can fully reflect this.

Chen Mutian, who is a graduate of Jianzhong School in Taiwan, recently visited his fifth choice high school in Beijing. He saw that the library there was richer in resources than Jianzhong School, and the art works produced by the students were more outstanding. The teachers constantly emphasized that they should not study too hard. The school promoted various special activities and science competitions, and had experimental classrooms open at any time for students to do scientific research. Even in high school, there were opportunities for exchange and cooperation with schools from various countries.

"My first feeling is that we have lost, and we are still stuck under the wrong stereotype of China." Chen Mutian said that China's teaching environment has already moved towards the United States, and in a few years it will be able to leave Taiwan far behind. He believes that students on both sides of the Taiwan Strait have similar learning attitudes. Chinese students may work harder, but the entire education system and environment are the main reasons for Taiwan's backwardness.

Professor from Mainland China’s Teaching Attention

Coming to the best polytechnic university in China as an exchange student, Chen Mutian said that he was mentally prepared before departure, but he still gained a lot of insights while being there. After entering the university campus, he saw the implementation of various plans and resources of Tsinghua University in Beijing, which made him more clearly aware of the gap in the teaching environment between the two sides.

Chen Mutian was also impressed by Chinese university teachers. He mentioned that although many professors at Tsinghua University in Beijing did not have as good academic backgrounds as teachers at SJTU, they taught very seriously and cared about their students beyond his imagination. For example, Chen Mutian once sent a text message to his classroom teacher asking for leave, and the teacher replied: "No problem, remember to come to the office to make up for the class before class next week to make sure that the progress is not behind."

He also mentioned that a while ago, a classroom professor found that the learning effect of the class was not good, so he decided not to attend class every other week and let the students study by themselves in the classroom. "The teachers I saw were very attentive and tried their best to help students really learn." Chen Mutian said.

Feeling personally the teaching and living environment in China, Chen Mutian said with emotion that when he was in Taiwan, he could never understand what China was thinking. Only when he was in Taiwan could he discover the advantages and problems here. Having met many students from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, he believes that Taiwanese students lack the most vision, broad-mindedness, and awareness of the risks of global competition. Therefore, he also believes: "Taiwanese students must come to China to study if they have the opportunity. It is very worthwhile."
