There was a joke a while ago that after celebrating the National Day, it means that all the statutory holidays in 2017 have been celebrated. But don’t worry, one month later, there will be another festival waiting for you, that is "Double 11"! However, this year’s shopping may not be as pleasant as before, because recently both express delivery giants announced price increases!

On October 10, ZTO stated that due to factors such as increased transportation, labor, and raw material costs, it would increase express delivery prices with immediate effect. On October 11, Yunda also announced that it would increase express delivery prices.

Speaking of express delivery that is now "loved" by people across the country, one person must be mentioned. She started from scratch with her husband and founded STO Express. She is known as the queen of express delivery, Chen Xiaoying↓↓

Some people have revealed before that the "three links and one connection" that account for half of the domestic express delivery market are all related to this Chen Xiaoying↓↓

You can see how powerful Chen Xiaoying is! Then why are all the courier companies related to her? How did she become the "central figure" of China Express?

In fact, before becoming the "overbearing president" of express delivery, Chen Xiaoying experienced a period of poverty.

Chen Xiaoying was born in Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province, the "hometown of express delivery". It is the scenery here that is painted in "Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains".

Her father fell ill and passed away when she was very young, leaving her with her mother and brother to depend on each other.

The family travels to and from fields, pig pens, and tea gardens every day. They often work hard for a year and earn only a few hundred yuan. Chen Xiaoying's brother Chen Dejun studied carpentry after graduating from junior high school, and his monthly salary of 30 yuan was used to supplement the family's income.

Chen Xiaoying also went out to work as a teenager in a printing and dyeing factory in Hangzhou, where she met her husband Nie Tengfei.

Because Tonglu people are particularly hard-working, many Tonglu people have started express delivery businesses that others are unwilling to do. At that time, Hangzhou's import and export trade was booming, and foreign trade companies traveling between Shanghai and Hangzhou encountered a problem: "Customs declaration forms must arrive at the port the next day, but it takes three days to go through EMS."

Nie Tengfei and his friend Zhan Jisheng discovered that it might be a good job to help these bosses deliver customs declaration forms: one person takes the train from Hangzhou to Shanghai every early morning, and the other person receives the goods at the train station and sends them to the city for 100 yuan per order. After deducting the round-trip fare, you can earn at least 70 yuan from one order

Zhan Jisheng

In 1993, Nie Tengfei opened a private express delivery company, Shengtong Company, which was the predecessor of STO. At that time, STO's office was in a shabby room on Hushu North Road, Hangzhou. The company only had one desk, chair, one sofa, and six or seven people.

Not long after the company was established, Chen Xiaoying joined and was responsible for answering phone calls and developing business. At that time, Chen Xiaoying worked sixteen or seventeen hours a day and was often so tired that she fell asleep, but she did not feel bitter. "My life was very fulfilling at that time, and I felt that my future development was very promising."

After one year, the company earned 20,000 yuan, which was their "first pot of gold."

As the volume of express delivery business expanded, Nie Tengfei mobilized his younger brother Nie Tengyun (the founder of Yunda Express), Chen Xiaoying's brother Chen Dejun and other relatives and friends to join in.

In order to familiarize themselves with the delivery terrain, a group of people dug through countless maps and went through all kinds of hardships, visiting every street and alley in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai.

A few years later, the company has continued to grow in size. But at this moment, Nie Tengfei died in a car accident while on a business trip. The company was in chaos. Chen Xiaoying, who had not yet recovered from her grief, had to take over STO Express.

Since then, the former partners have left STO one after another to start new businesses.

In 1999, Nie Tengyun left STO and established Yunda Express.

In 2000, Zhang Xiaojuan, Chen Dejun's junior high school classmate and former STO financial officer, founded YTO Express with her husband.

In 2002, Sang Xuebing, the former branch manager of STO Express, and Lai Meisong, a friend of Chen Dejun, established ZTO Express.

In May 2003, Huitong Express was established. Two years later, it was acquired by Tonglu businessman Xu Jianrong. In 2010, it was acquired by Best Network and became Best Huitong.

Gradually, Tonglu County became the hometown of express delivery. In addition to Wang Wei’s SF Express and Chen Ping’s Home Delivery, a few young people from Tonglu have completely subverted China’s logistics industry.

Some media made statistics in 2015, showing that there are more than 2,500 express delivery companies founded and managed by private entrepreneurs from Tonglu in the country, accounting for nearly 60% of the national express delivery industry's market share. "Children in our village know how to do express delivery when they are born. They can see and listen well." China's express delivery industry is almost "contracted" by Tonglu people.

Soon, the race began among fellow couriers.

STO's development "weapon" is the franchise system. The characteristic of the franchise system is that in addition to paying deposits and other fees to the headquarters, outlets are responsible for their own profits and losses from top to bottom and become their own "boss".

Someone summarized the advantages of the franchise system, "When the franchisee adds money, the courier can lead the whole family to deliver goods together. The franchise network mechanism is flexible and has the explosive power to mobilize the masses."

With the franchise system, STO quickly expanded its outlets. Yunda, Yuantong, and Zhongtong also completely copied STO's model.

Although the "three links and one reach" are both from the "Tonglu Gang", there is not much cooperation between them. A senior executive of Yunda once said, "After leaving the mountains, they do not communicate with each other and do their own business."

The competition for interests has inevitably made these former fellow villagers feel like strangers, and the industry has gradually become fragmented. However, STO is still the leader in the industry.

Over the past ten years, Chen Xiaoying's STO Express has become a giant in the domestic express delivery industry. One in every six packages is sent by STO Express.

In 2012, STO Express acquired Tiantian Express founded by Zhan Jisheng and his brother for 160 million yuan. Chen Xiaoying’s second husband, Xi Chunyang, the former president of STO Express, became the chairman and CEO of Tiantian Express.

When a company becomes big, it is better to become a listed company. Everyone will be happier with dividends every year. For this reason, Shentong once again became the first to eat crabs.

On the last trading day of 2016, STO Express officially landed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. According to the closing market value of the day, the market value of STO Express shares held by brothers Chen Dejun and Chen Xiaoying is approximately 27.38 billion yuan.

While everyone was shopping, Chen Xiaoying turned from a working girl into a "Queen of Express Delivery" with a net worth of tens of billions. She also engaged in real estate, industry, investment, computer network technology, etc., and she flourished across industries. As the woman behind Jack Ma's father, why is this "gap" so big?

However, Chen Xiaoying, the winner in life, did something unexpected recently.

On September 27 this year, Chen Xiaoying submitted her resignation to STO Company, resigning from the company's vice chairman, director and other positions due to personal reasons ↓↓

Now that Chen Xiaoying has stepped down from her high position, what are her next plans? Let's look forward to it while waiting for the express delivery.
