British Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne will announce on Monday that the UK will relax visa requirements for Chinese business people and tourists.

Data show that Chinese tourists spend up to 1,676 pounds per capita in the UK, which is three times the global average. In 2012, Chinese tourists spent a total of US$102 billion on overseas travel, making them the most valuable tourists in the world. Competition among countries around the world to attract Chinese tourists is fierce. It is understood that France welcomes 25% more Chinese tourists than the UK every year.

British government officials who will accompany George Osborne on his trip said on Sunday that the decision to relax visa requirements was both symbolic and substantive. "Business people generally believe that the visa system for visiting the UK is difficult. This decision is of great significance. We want to show China that we welcome their people and their investment," the official said.

Previously, British retailers were generally worried about visa issues for Chinese tourists. They complain that the cumbersome procedures for visiting Britain are depriving them of these rising social status tourists.

According to the new visa requirements, Chinese business people will be able to apply for priority visas issued 24 hours a day without having to wait a week. London will also trial a joint visa application process with other European countries.
