Washington Post: Chinese students are flocking to U.S. universities, setting a record for overseas students
Thousands of Chinese students are flocking to U.S. universities, helping to set a record for overseas students in the United States. Similarly, the number of American students studying full-time abroad has also increased rapidly, although this number is slightly thin compared with students coming to the United States.
This set of figures comes from a statistical report released on Monday by a non-profit organization that cooperates with the US government.
According to international education institutions and the Ministry of Education and Culture, foreign students in the United States contribute approximately US$24 billion every year, two-thirds of which come from their family assistance.
According to released figures, 819,644 international students studied in the United States in the 2012-13 academic year. The top five are China, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Canada. The figure is a record, 7% higher than last year and 40% higher than a decade ago. Although the numbers are increasing, international students still account for less than 4% of all students.
After the 911 incident, the number of students coming to the United States decreased for a time, mainly because of the increased difficulty in obtaining visas. Now, the number has resumed its growth momentum.
There are approximately 235,000 international students from China, an increase of 21%. China's booming middle class has stimulated demand for studying abroad with their inherent view that "American university education is of high quality". One-third of Chinese students have chosen business and management majors.
"Chinese students and their parents seek high-quality education and understand the importance of nationalized education, which makes the United States their first choice for studying abroad, because we do have the ability to attract international students." said the head of a US research institution.
The preferred schools for international students include the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, New York University, Columbia University New York Campus, etc.
For comparison, there are 283,332 American students studying in overseas schools, a 3% increase from last year. Their preferred study abroad destinations include the UK, Italy, Spain, France and China.
Because of the publicity effect of the Beijing Olympics and the emergence of more English-taught courses, China has begun to attract American students. The U.S. government has launched a 100,000 elite program with the goal of sending 100,000 American students to China within four years starting in 2010.
The report shows: In the 2011-2012 school year, 14,887 American students studied in China, an increase of 2%.
