The fiscal year budget increases immigration services. Chinese undocumented immigrants who are detained can find free legal representation. After New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Speaker Marita took office, they implemented a series of policies friendly to the immigrant community, including a special increase in funding for immigration services in the fiscal year 2015 budget. On July 1, the Immigration Alliance held a press conference to respond to the budget. Although federal immigration reform has stalled, several bills recently passed by the New York City Council have brought hope to immigrants. The New York City Immigration Alliance held a press conference to discuss the impact of the 2015 budget passed by the City Council on immigrant communities. In the fiscal year 2015 budget, more than 10 million dollars are earmarked for expanding services to immigrant communities. 5.3 million will be used for adult language education, ESL projects, and the provision of legal services, 1 million will be used to establish a joint project with CUNY, the City University of New York, to help immigrants naturalize, 4.9 million will be used to provide legal aid to undocumented immigrants facing deportation, and immigrant cultural institutions will also receive 1.5 million in grants to enrich cultural activities in immigrant communities. At the press conference that day, Cui Qinghan, executive director of the New York City Immigration Alliance, said that the fiscal year 15 budget is a major victory for the immigrant community, and there are many services that are closely related to the Chinese immigrant community. "Many undocumented immigrants of Chinese origin who are detained are in urgent need of representation. Now for the first time in history, they can find free legal representation." Wan Qijia, chairman of the City Council's Immigration Committee, also attended the event. He said that the budget gave a strong signal that New York welcomes immigrants. "For the immigrant community, especially the Chinese immigrant community, we hope that everyone can obtain language education services, legal services, and health services." The Immigration Alliance will also provide legal services for DACA suspension of deportation in the near future. Interested people can check the DACA Chinese website for more information.
