On the morning of November 1, local time, Trump posted on social media, using the terrorist car attack in New York City as an example, demanding that the United States should have stricter immigration regulations. This has been the mainstay of his political views since the 2016 campaign.
Trump wrote: “This terrorist was admitted through the Diversity Visa Lottery. Program) into our country, this is Schumer’s masterpiece. What I want is a merit-based immigration policy.”
He went on to write: “We are working very hard to promote a merit-based immigration policy, and we can no longer have the Democratic Party’s policy. We have to be stricter and smarter."
Trump also used the word "animal" in the cabinet meeting to describe the New York car attack suspect Saipov who used the immigration lottery program to enter the United States.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (Chuck), who was directly named by Trump Schumer, responded on the morning of the 1st: "It seems that it is not too early to turn a tragedy into a politicized means."
Schumer also wrote on social media that Trump and his long-standing technique of "politicizing and dividing the United States" whenever the country is in trouble. The two of them, why not "bring everyone together."
The Washington Post reported that during 2013, Schumer and several other senators proposed a cross-party proposal to amend U.S. immigration regulations, including canceling the diversity immigrant visa lottery program. Although the proposal successfully passed the Senate, it failed to pass the House of Representatives.
Republican U.S. Senator Jeff Flake wrote: "In fact, the "Gang of Eight" including Schumer cut the diversity immigrant visa program during a broad review of immigration policy."
