A report released by the Center for Immigration Studies (CMS) think tank on Thursday showed that illegal immigrants in the United States dropped to 10.79 million in 2016 from 11.725 million in 2010, the smallest number since 2003.
The nearly 1 million decrease in the past six years is mainly illegal immigrants from Mexico, who dropped from 6.6 million in 2010 to 5.7 million in 2016. During the same period, the number of illegal immigrants from China increased from 295,000 to 380,000.
During this period, the number of illegal immigrants from Central America also increased, including an increase of 100,000 illegal immigrants from Honduras and an increase of 50,000 illegal immigrants from Guatemala.
In addition, illegal immigrants from India have also increased, from 365,000 in 2010 to 475,000 in 2016.
The conclusion of this report points out that the number of illegal immigrants in the United States has continued to decline over the past six years. This is a fact that cannot be denied. The
report provides estimates of the number of illegal immigrants living in the United States in 2016. The number of illegal immigrants from most countries has continued to decline since 2010. Judging from the decline in numbers, illegal immigrants from Mexico decreased the most, with about 1 million fewer people.
In terms of the proportion of decline, illegal immigrants from Poland (-47%), Peru (-40%), Ecuador (-31%), Colombia (-29%) and South Korea (-27%) experienced the largest declines.
Among states across the country, illegal immigration in Illinois (-20%), North Carolina (-16%), California (-13%), New York (-13%), Arizona (-12%) and Georgia (-11%) all experienced a decrease of more than 10%. Only Texas (+2%) saw an increase in illegal immigration.
The report shows that the number of illegal immigrants from China is increasing. Data show that in 1990, there were approximately 70,000 illegal immigrants from China. This number grew to 295,000 in 2010 and 380,000 in 2016.
Among the major countries surveyed by this study, in addition to China, illegal immigration from India, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Dominica also increased between 2010 and 2016.
Looking at the sources of illegal immigrants, illegal immigrants from North America, South America and Europe decreased by 14% to 23%, while those from Asia, Africa and Central America increased by 8% to 10%. The increase in Asia is mainly due to the increase in illegal immigrants from China and India.
Looking at the number of illegal immigrants in each state, only Texas (increased by 40,000) and Nebraska (increased by 12,000) experienced an increase of more than 10,000, while California (down by 267,000), Illinois (down by 118,000) and New York (down by 115,000), which have a larger number of illegal immigrants, all saw significant decreases in illegal immigrants. Of all the states, Alabama had the largest decline, at 37%.
