What skills did you bring to the United States? Chen Wan Samaranch has a saying that is very simple and profound. He said that humans have five universal languages, money, war, art, sex and sports. Savon's words are of great inspiration to us. When you go abroad to study abroad, you are afraid of being alone like duckweed. But if you can pursue the arts and sports that Savon mentioned, you won't be too alone after coming to the United States. Because art and sports are the common languages of mankind, in these two fields, you can easily find your favorite fellow travelers in foreign countries. You don’t have to be rich, you don’t have to have sexual partners, but people who are equipped with artistic atmosphere and sports hobbies can more easily get rid of the loneliness and desolation when studying abroad than those who have no interest in it. For example, a movie or a concert, or a shared ball game can squeeze away your loneliness. Isn't that so? People always talk about wanting to integrate into mainstream America, but they don’t know where to start. When Americans talk about a movie, or when they talk about a football game, we are dumbstruck, as if we are listening to what is being said. In fact, no matter where you are in the world, if you want to do as the locals do, you must be familiar with the topics that the local people like. And these have little to do with academic proficiency, nor do they have anything to do with perfect SAT scores. People wandering around in mainstream American society are not necessarily proficient in Archimedes' laws and solid geometry. But most people in mainstream American society, or even just young American elementary and middle school students, have a sincere interest in the fields of art or sports. Some American children can even reach the point where arts and sports blossom together. Drama performances, symphony bands, singing groups, poetry clubs, book clubs, art exhibitions, etc. in American schools undoubtedly belong to the category of art. The various popular ball games in American schools, middle and long-distance running, ice hockey, sports cheerleading, etc. are undoubtedly the sports activities that Savon talked about. In fact, we Chinese American parents are busy worrying about our children every day. In addition to caring about academics, we also deal with the training and cultivation of our children in art and sports. Learning piano and violin, learning swimming and playing ball are the concrete manifestations of these two aspects. Chinese children have never been afraid of exams, and children who can go abroad will not have too bad IQs. If they want to thrive in the United States, international students may wish to refer to Savon's "Theory of Five Human Languages" and strive to strengthen their cultivation in art and sports. People who are well-educated are also prone to self-confidence. And confidence is what we absolutely need. Especially for international students who have traveled across the ocean, self-confidence is particularly important.
