Zhen Kaiying: City of Swans on the Bank of the Yellow River (2) City of Swans on the Bank of the Yellow River?#38543; "World Chinese Media Cooperation Alliance Investigation Team"'s visit to Sanmenxia Zhen Kaiying 2. City of Swans with Green Waters and Green Mountains With the start of the Sanmenxia Water Conservancy Project, in March 1957, the central government established Sanmenxia City in the former Shaanxi Prefecture. In 1961, due to changes in Sino-Soviet relations and national economic difficulties, Sanmenxia City was downgraded from a prefecture-level city to a county-level city. It was re-upgraded to a prefecture-level city in 1986 and currently governs Hubin District, Yima City, Mianchi County, Shaanxi County, Lingbao City, Lushi County, economic and technological development zones and industrial clusters, with a total area of 10,496 square kilometers and a population of 2.2748 million. After decades of operation, Sanmenxia is now a garden city "surrounded by mountains and water on three sides, half city smoked villages and half city farmland". There are Yawu Mountain National Forest Park, Ganshan National Forest Park, and Yuhuang Mountain National Forest Park within the city. Two rows of Tasmania pines and French plane trees are planted on both sides of the city streets, and trees are everywhere. The dam's throttling irrigation has changed the original natural environment of Sanmenxia, forming a large area of Yellow River wetland in the reservoir area upstream of the Sanmenxia Dam. The pleasant wetland environment attracts many birds to Sanmenxia City, among which the white swan is the most famous. It is said that before 2005, during the period from winter to early spring of the following year, white swans would always be welcomed on the Yellow River Wetland in Sanmenxia. But at that time there were only a few, three to five, not a large number. After Sanmenxia City developed and protected the wetland, the white swans came in droves, forming the scale it is today. By artificially increasing the water surface and planting more plants, the wetland nature of Sanmenxia Swan Lake National Urban Wetland Park has not only been not destroyed, but has also been enhanced. Since 2005, the number of swans coming to Sanmenxia to spend the winter has increased year by year, with tens of thousands in the past two years. In April 2010, Sanmenxia was named the "Hometown of Whooper Swans" by the China Wildlife Conservation Association. It was early summer when our inspection team arrived. This is the time when swans fly back to Siberia to escape the scorching heat. There should not be swans in the wetlands. However, on the lake in the park, swans in twos and threes are standing or lying in the water, showing no fear of tourists. Locals say that the beautiful environment of the park makes the swans become "lazy" and want to make Sanmenxia their permanent home. The white swans that come in droves make Sanmenxia, a city known as the "Swan City", more worthy of its name. Sanmenxia Dam Sanmenxia Swan 3. The 18th China (Sanmenxia) International Yellow River Tourism Festival The Sanmenxia Municipal Government has spared no effort in publicizing Sanmenxia and promoting Yellow River cultural tourism. The China (Sanmenxia) International Yellow River Tourism Festival has been held for 18 times so far. Under the organization of the World Chinese Media Cooperation Alliance, the author and 33 Chinese-language media reporters from 15 countries and regions went to Sanmenxia and attended major events such as the "Dragon Walking the World Yellow River Soul" large-scale theatrical performance at this tourism festival, China's Greater Yellow River Tourism International Seminar and Conference, the "Travel Friends" Exchange Conference Ten Thousand Tent Festival, and Crossing the "Mother River". They also visited and interviewed the representative attractions of Sanmenxia. This tourism festival has a total of 15 activities, including the opening ceremony and large-scale theatrical performance of "Dragon Walking the World Yellow River Soul", China's Greater Yellow River Tourism International Seminar and Conference, China's Sanmenxia Crossing the Mother River in 2012, and Sanmenxia Economic and Trade Cooperation Negotiation and Signing Ceremony as the four main activities. Other supporting activities include the 2012 Asian Fortune Forum, economic cooperation project matchmaking and business inspections, the "World Yellow River" large-scale stamp collection in nine provinces (districts) along the Yellow River and the national photography exhibition of Sanmenxia tourism scenery, the first Outdoor Products Expo and the National Travel Friends Exchange Conference, the first Sanmenxia Automobile Culture Cultural Tourism Expo, the 5th Science, Technology, Culture and Art Festival, Hangu Pass "Tea Tasting Discussion", "Yellow River Journey Green Ganshan" National Mountain Bike Invitational Competition, the 5th National Twin Rafting Competition, hot air balloon "Crossing the Yellow River Dan Gorge", and the "Charming Sanmenxia" series of mass square cultural and sports activities. The "2012 China Sanmenxia (Third) Mother River Crossing" event held at the Swan Lake National Urban Wetland Park on May 20 allowed us to experience the spectacular scene of thousands of people competing to cross the Yellow River and tens of thousands of people watching. On the day of the event, more than 90 teams and 2,568 swimmers from 29 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan entered the water from the bank of Sanhe Square in the city's Swan Lake National Urban Wetland Park, crossed the Yellow River with a straight line distance of about 1,300 meters, and swam to the opposite bank of Taiyangdu Landing in Pinglu County, Shanxi Province. Although the sun was blazing, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of residents on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to watch. The inspection team spent two days in Sanmenxia and had a preliminary understanding of the city. Although we did not see the spectacular sight of the dam releasing water, we did see the turbulent Yellow River being tamed by the dam surface into a clear, translucent, sparkling lake. The streets here are neat and tidy, and there are many tall buildings; the government officials are quick-thinking, innovative and pragmatic; the people here are simple, warm and hospitable, making people forget to leave.
