The visiting scholars and international students from China and Taiwan who came to the English Department of Arizona State University twenty years ago to further their studies and learn English teaching must know that they have devoted their lives to teaching English as a second language (Teaching English as a Second Language) Dr. James W. Ney, professor of Second Language, TESL. Unfortunately, Professor Nye passed away peacefully in Scottsdale on May 30 this year at the age of 84. Professor Nye was born in Kenya, Africa on July 28, 1932, where he lived until he was 7 years old. Later, his family moved to Nanaimo, Canada. He grew up outdoors and was good at yachting, fishing, and mountain climbing. Such hobbies stayed with him throughout his life. He married in 1954 and soon moved to the United States. He first attended Wheaton College and received a master's degree in theology. Later, he studied at the University of Michigan and received a doctorate in English language and literature education. He has been engaged in TESL teaching for a long time and has rich experience and fruitful academic research results. Dr. Nye retired from the Department of English at Arizona State University as Professor Emeritus. He is an authoritative expert on English as a second language teaching in the world and has given lectures in many countries. Professor Nye loves life, is humorous, and has a happy family.
