The Alberta flat tax bill failed to pass the first hurdle and was rejected by the Senate. The controversial flat tax bill significantly simplified Arizona's state income tax proposal and failed in the current Congress. The proposer said he would try again next year. Republican House of Representatives Steve Cote told the media that although the results were unexpected, he still had many issues to discuss with accountants and needed to find more reasons to convince members of the two chambers. The bill simplifies five state income tax rates, minus the standard deduction, support exemption and deduction, into one. A legislative budget staff analysis found that taxpayers making less than $100,000 will pay more in taxes, while taxpayers making more than $100,000 will pay less. The state House of Representatives passed the bill last week, but the Senate rejected it with a majority of votes.
