Renovation project in downtown Phoenix begins. Renovating the streets near the state capital has long been proposed as a keynote to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Arizona in 2012. But with the introduction of that troubled fiscal budget, the two parties are clamoring for cuts in programs, such as education and health care, which cannot be reduced. The centennial celebration looks much smaller. Yet the 100th anniversary of Arizona's admission to the Union is by no means a cosmetic event, at least for politicians. On Tuesday this week, the governor and others attended the groundbreaking ceremony to launch the street renovation project in central Fengcheng. The renovation project will include sidewalk decorations on Washington Street, the establishment of new crosswalks, bicycle lanes, etc. Other projects include renovating the museum and collecting pennies to pay for the cleaning of the copper roof of the old State House.
