Giffords makes first public appearance since shooting Congressman Giffords made his first public appearance since he was tragically shot in the head in January this year. ABC News reported that when Giffords' husband, astronaut Kelly, received the award at a ceremony attended by hundreds of people near the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Giffords appeared in a wheelchair with a smile and stood up to kiss her husband. The report stated that her hair was much shorter than in previously released photos, and she was wearing glasses, a beige scarf, a light-colored shirt, jeans and sneakers. As the crew members of the space shuttle Endeavor were being commended, she looked in high spirits and was chatting and laughing with the people sitting next to her. Kelly is in charge of the Endeavor mission. She left early while the shuttle crew watched home movies. These crew members piloted the space shuttle safely back to Earth and were awarded the Space Flight Medal. Earlier, Kelly announced his retirement after completing the Endeavor space mission. He and his wife spent a difficult recovery period together and wrote a book to commemorate their romance.
