Phoenix mayoral election aborted Preliminary vote count results on Tuesday night showed that a former city council member and a political consultant were leading the vote in the Phoenix mayoral election and may become the next mayor of Phoenix. However, none of the five candidates received more than 50% of the votes, so the mayoral election will be held for a second time on November 8. The candidate who gets more than half of the votes will take the mayor's office on January 3 next year. Preliminary results show that City Councilman Greg Stanton, a Democrat, received 38% of the vote, about 91,000 votes. Wesgret, a top aide to Republican former Gov. Symington, had nearly 21 percent.
