Recently, Maricopa County reported two deaths from West Nile virus attacks caused by venomous mosquito bites. Both deceased men were elderly men. The state Department of Health and Environmental Services says there have been more than 100 cases of West Nile virus this season. According to virus experts, this year's venomous mosquito cases are different from previous years. Last year, West Nile virus mostly occurred in eastern Maricopa County, but this year, it is found throughout the county. Last year, 166 people were infected with West Nile virus in the state and 14 people died, mostly in Maricopa County. To avoid infection, you should do the following: – Avoid going outdoors between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active. – If you must be outdoors, wear lightweight clothing that covers your arms and legs, and use mosquito repellent. – Make sure doors and windows are closed. – Eliminate mosquito-breeding potted plants, discarded tires, bird baths and other containers that may collect stagnant water. – Ensure pool and water feature decorations are clean. – Change the water in outdoor flower pots and pet drinking fountains at least twice a week.
