The Flagstaff Port police chief died while walking. The Flagstaff Port Police Department announced that its chief died while walking on October 10. Chief Cooper left home for a walk at 10 a.m. that day and did not return home for a long time. His family called the police for help. Police began an intensive ground and air search and found the man unconscious near Highway 89 and Purple Sage around 3 p.m. Medical personnel immediately tried to save Cooper, but they could not save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Cooper, 57, has served in the Flagstaff Police Department for more than 30 years and was promoted to chief in July 2006. Cooper's cause of death is unclear.
