Phoenix elects new mayor: Stanton (Alberta Times) A new mayor was also elected in Phoenix on Tuesday. Democrat Greg Stanton defeated Republican Wes Guray and became the new mayor of Phoenix, the sixth largest city in the United States, replacing Gordon, who was retiring when his term expired. Stanton is a lawyer who served as a city council member for nine years before resigning in 2009 to accept a job as a senior official in the State Attorney's Office. He has left the attorney general's office after running for Phoenix mayor. Phoenix is one of the cities hardest hit by the housing crisis in the United States. Housing prices in the city are still lower than the lowest point four years ago, and the unemployment rate has been hovering at 8%. Stanton said his first issues after taking office include increasing funding for early childhood education and establishing after-school learning programs. He also proposed diversifying the city's economy, focusing on technology and health care. Voters registered to vote this time accounted for about 27% of the city's population, and 160,000 people voted on Tuesday, breaking the record of 154,000 in 1989.
