Recall election, unprecedented in Alberta, Lewis wins (Alberta Times) In the Super Tuesday election in November, Arizona State Senate President Russell Pearce (PEARCE, RUSSELL) lost ground in his own district (District 18, Mesa City), 45%:53%, and was defeated by his opponent Jerry Lewis (LEWIS, JERRY) by more than one horse. Pierce was the sponsor of the SB1070 immigration law that took effect in 2010. Although this law was passed by the Texas House of Representatives and the Senate and signed by the governor, it has also pushed Arizona to the forefront of public opinion. Although Pierce has always appeared as a tough opponent of illegal immigration, this time his campaign plan is relatively conservative, including corporate tax cuts, private school education vouchers, abortion restrictions, gun rights, restrictions on unions, and putting the immigration bill at the end. Opponent Lewis did not emphasize immigration issues, but also focused on education. Because of Pierce's implementation of the bill to combat illegal immigration, he was strongly disliked by the Hispanic community and voters, leading to this so-called recall election, the first in Arizona's nearly 100-year history. Lewis' victory over Pierce also means that Republican lawmakers will elect a new Senate leader. Republicans reminded candidates in the party to learn lessons from Pierce's defeat and should adopt a softer approach to avoid a similar fate.
