Black Friday has become the rooster crow in the middle of the night. For many people, the arrival of Thanksgiving means that loved ones and friends gather together to have a full meal on Thursday night, fill their wallets, and prepare to join the rush to buy Christmas gifts for the whole family early on Friday morning. This year, however, the madness will start early. Merchants such as Target, Kohls and Best Buy have announced that they will open their stores on Thanksgiving night, with some stores opening as early as 8 p.m. The move sparked resentment from employees who felt the retailer was stealing their Thanksgiving. More than 160,000 people have signed an online petition called 'Tell Target To Save Thanksgiving' on Change.org. The petition calls for Target to move its opening hours back to 5 a.m. on Friday instead of midnight. People are protesting on notice boards at Kohls and Best Buy. The petition states: Sharing a delicious meal and a complete holiday with your family on Thanksgiving night is not only a privilege for the elite of this nation, but also a right for all Americans. Phoenix resident Michelle McDonald agrees, but she's been out of work for a long time and would take any job she can get, even if it sacrifices the chance to share a holiday meal with her family. Target issued a statement on the petition: Black Friday is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. We have customers requesting that they shop after a big meal on Thanksgiving night. We are simply meeting the needs of our customers...Target will provide holiday pay to employees who work on Thanksgiving Day. "The Chicken Crows at Midnight" comes from Gao Yubao's novel of the same name. The story goes that in order to make the long-term workers work more, the landlord Zhou Papi got up in the middle of the night and imitated the crow of chickens to urge the workers to get up and work.
