Apaio: The police chief and the murder of the Sedona couple were committed by the same person. Sheriff Arpaio said at a press conference on Tuesday morning that evidence from the murder weapon indicated that the murderer who killed the Anthem Township police chief recently was the same person who killed a couple in Yavapai County last week. Arpaio said the slugs taken from both crime scenes were the same. "The two murders in recent days involved high-powered rifles," Arpaio said. The suspect in both cases, 30-year-old Drew Ryan Maras, was killed at the same time as the deputy during a shootout on Sunday morning. Officers found Marras asleep in a van at Anthem Medical Center. As Coleman approached the car door, Maras suddenly fired at the deputy, and other officers fired back, killing the suspect. Sheriff Coleman was transported to a local hospital, where he died shortly after arrival. An investigation at the scene showed that Maras fired 29 shots, two of which hit Coleman's vitals. The officers returned fire and fired 41 rounds. Police said Maras shot and killed James Johnson and Carol Lesford at a highway exit in Sedan. Detectives spoke with Maras' father in Chicago, who said Maras had been in the Marine Corps Reserves and may have suffered from depression. He had little contact with his family during the 18 months he lived in Phoenix. According to Facebook, Maras is a graduate of a state university and has written an online science fiction/new era novel.
