Some Republican state lawmakers have proposed requiring teachers to comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules when speaking in schools. According to FCC regulations, anyone who publishes remarks on television or radio cannot contain obscene or indecent words, otherwise they will be deemed to be guilty of "blasphemy" and considered a nuisance to the public. The bill, SB1467, was proposed by Republican state Sen. Lori Clay of Anthem Township. Senator Clay hopes that those who set an example will take the lead in speaking civilized words. First-time offenders will be suspended from school for a week, and serious cases may even be dismissed. Clay said the bill stemmed from complaints from local high school students that teachers used inappropriate language in front of students. The bill applies to semester-long education in the state, from elementary to high school, as well as community colleges and universities. Clay later said she changed her mind and did not plan to mandate the bill at community colleges and universities. The state Senate Education Committee has not yet scheduled a hearing on SB1467.
