The number of teen driving deaths in the state is on the rise, according to a new study by the Governors Highway Safety Association. In fact, teen driving fatalities are on the rise across the country, with Arizona ranking 23rd. Under the current law, a teenager can get a driver's license after only 30 hours of learning to drive under the supervision of a licensed adult, but driving instructor Bertha Barrera says the law is an oversight. "Thirty hours is definitely not enough experience to operate a car safely," Barrera said. Barrera also blamed mobile phone calls and text messages for the frequent occurrence of driving accidents among teenagers. "Nothing is more important than life. Phone calls and text messages can wait. It doesn't matter if the wallet is out of reach." The Governor's Highway Safety Association called on parents to strengthen supervision for teenagers to drive safely.
