The annual city satisfaction survey shows that Tempe residents are satisfied with their quality of life, but they want a safer living environment. The survey, conducted by a Kansas company, found that 86% of Tempe residents are satisfied with the city's quality of life, 87% like their city's image, and 90% are satisfied with city services. The national average of residents' satisfaction with urban services is 57%. Satisfaction dropped by an average of 2% to 3% due to government financial constraints and service cuts. Tempe is also cutting back. Mayor Hugh Holman said the city government has always valued residents' opinions and hopes to maintain the original level of citizen services while cutting finances. Tempe residents far outpace the nation in satisfaction with transportation, sidewalks, off-road trails and trash collection. Residents want the city to focus on safety and preservation and repair of commercial properties and homes. In terms of safety, respondents in Tempe want the city to do more repairs on public facilities such as street lights. On another issue, only 53% of people were satisfied with public participation in decision-making. The survey company said that this number is unsurprisingly low among Americans. The survey was conducted in October last year and 803 random questionnaires were returned, with a margin of error of 3.5%.
