US Airways employees caught a fugitive at the airport (Alberta Times) Police said that on April 22, US Airways employees at the airport caught a prisoner escaping from police custody. John Liebesso was extradited from Detroit to Phoenix that day, accompanied by two Yavapai County police officers. At about 5 p.m., the three people walked towards the elevator from Terminal 3 of the airport. Liebeso broke away from the police and began to escape. When he ran to the tarmac of Terminal 4, he was spotted by a US Airways employee, who stopped him and questioned him. The fugitive lied that he "forgot" to report the crime to the police. Employees tried to gain further control of the fugitive, but Liebeso continued to escape and attempted to steal the shuttle. Other US Airways employees joined in the roundup and were able to contain the fugitive until police arrived. Police said the fugitive had been wearing electric shock-type shackles and was controlled by Yavapai County police officers who accompanied him. During the flight, the police temporarily removed the shackles and did not activate them when getting off the plane, which led to the escape drama. Fortunately he entered the airstrip and said there were no flights taking off or landing. Liebeso faces two charges from Phoenix police in addition to his original charges, including vehicle theft and violation of federal airspace laws.
