Gathering public opinion for a sales tax increase (Alberta Times) A civil society group is collecting public opinion for a one-cent sales tax increase for the state, in order to catch up with the November election bus and allow voters to vote. The group, Campaign for Quality and Talent Education, claims to have collected more than 175,000 signatures from supporters. The legislation stipulates that a proposal must have at least 172,809 supporters before it can be put to voters for a vote. The group's director, Anya Peterson, said they would continue to collect signatures to counteract invalid signatures. Funds raised from the sales tax increase will be used for education, health care and other state services, Peterson said. If successful, the legislation would take effect after the temporary sales tax signed by the governor expires in mid-2013.
