The well-being of children in Arizona is a cause for concern (Alberta Times) According to the National Child Wellbeing Survey report released on Tuesday, Alberta's scores in education, economic well-being, health, family and community fell instead of rising, falling to 46th place from 37th last year. The situation is worrying. The data in the report are taken from information before 2011. From 2005 to 2011, 68% of children in Alberta did not attend preschool, which is much lower than the national average of 53% of children attending preschool. In terms of education, we can see some encouraging progress, such as fourth-grade reading scores and eighth-grade math scores, as well as high school graduation rates. In addition, the number of children living in poverty in Alberta has jumped from 20% in 2005 to 24% now. There are 150,000 children under the age of 6 living below the poverty line and relying on government welfare. In 2008, 16% of the state's children were uninsured, and in 2010 the number improved slightly, to 13%. The report found that since 2005, the proportion of children living in single-parent families has increased to 37%, exceeding the national average of 34%.
